Flowers are not the only ash-repellant agent—the most common is water.
It is well understood that ash gathers passively very little near bodies of water. However, water is also commonly used in ash removal, which is a particularly healthy industry in Erj. Ash formations doused in water seem to remain inert for some time, long enough to be removed and disposed of with little hazard to one’s health.
Typically, ash removal is indeed left to professionals. Besides being safer, most residents of Erj—certainly those outside of cities with strong water infrastructure—would rather keep their own water for themselves.
