Even Nulspire’s most knowledgeable researchers cannot reach a consensus as to the purpose of the male xihra’s brightly-coloured frills and stripes. Some have suggested the display is to attract the attention of females, though the near-total lack of them in the wild would seem to cast this theory into doubt. Others have put forth the idea that the display is perhaps a threat warning to would-be attackers, both of their own species, and others.
Whatever the case may be, no one would argue that the xihra is somewhat a last bastion of natural colour in Erj’s anemic landscape.
